Writing Brisbane

In 1996, I researched two projects for the Fellowship of Australian Writers (Qld); two guided walks in Brisbane's CBD and a broader guide to literary Brisbane which was published and distributed free, thanks to a grant from the Brisbane City Council.

At that time, Brisbane's writing past was little known, even to keen readers, yet there was an enormous amount of material available in places like John Oxley Library and the Fryer Library at the University of Queensland.  Over forty novels had already used the city as a setting and since then, many more have done so, along with many poets, playwrights and other scribes.  From poet James Brunton Stephens in 1859 to the Kadaitcha Sung by Sam Watson, this booklet gives a snapshot of a growing yet still neglected area of Brisbane's history.

Copies of "Writing Brisbane" are available in Brisbane City Council Libraries.
